Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is non-insulin dependent diabetes with onset < 25 years with autosomal dominant inheritance. It is a monogenic form of diabetes characterized by autosomal dominant mode of inheritance, onset of diabetes below 25 years of age and impaired insulin secretion is a major henotypic trait. Different subtypes due to mutations in different genes. Till date 6 MODY subtypes have been described, caused by mutations in various genes such as
- Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor 4a (MODY1)
- GCK (MODY2)
- HNF 1a (MODY3)
- Insulin Promoter Factor 1 (MODY4)
- HNF 1 b (MODY5) and
- Neuro D1 (MODY6).
